Gabriel Abotsie is a Lecturer in Nursing Sciences (Mental Health) at the University of East Anglia's School of Health Sciences. He holds a PhD from UEA and has a 0.2 WTE affiliation with the Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (NSFT) research department. His career spans clinical practice, research leadership, and academic teaching.
Education: BSc in Mental Health Nursing from the University of Dundee (2002-2005), MSc in Health Sciences from UEA (2011), and a PhD in mental health service research (2018). He was a CLAHRC fellow (2014) and led the NSFT Men’s Wellbeing Project and Professional Lead for Reducing Restrictive Interventions (RRI).
Research focuses on physical health disparities in serious mental illness, men’s mental health advocacy, and reducing restrictive interventions. He employs mixed methods and quality improvement methodologies. His work on RRI gained regional/national recognition and involved developing governance frameworks and coaching QI projects.
Teaching: Module lead for the Advanced Practice in Mental Health course (40 credits, Level 7) at UEA. Previously taught at Anglia Ruskin University and University of Suffolk.
Key projects include the Men’s Wellbeing Project and nurse-facilitated health checks for SMI patients, both published in peer-reviewed journals. He collaborates with NHS Trusts and academic institutions on improving mental health service delivery and equity.
