Fabian Stephany is an Assistant Professor in AI & Work at the Oxford Internet Institute (OII), University of Oxford. He is also a Research Affiliate at the Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society in Berlin and a Fellow at Bruegel, a Brussels-based think tank. His work bridges academia, policy, and technology, focusing on how digital transformation reshapes labor markets and skill demands.
His research centers on the impact of artificial intelligence and digital platforms on work, with a particular focus on emerging skills and the sustainability of new occupations. He leads the SkillScale Project, which analyzes workforce transformation using large-scale digital data. He is also the co-creator of the Online Labour Observatory, a collaborative data hub between the OII and the International Labour Organisation that supports researchers, policymakers, and journalists in understanding online platform work.
Fabian's scholarly contributions have appeared in leading academic journals and have been featured in major global media outlets including The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Telegraph, The Statesman, and Nikkei Asia. His interdisciplinary approach combines economics, data science, and social sciences to address pressing questions about the future of work in the digital age.
He has extensive experience working with international organizations such as the United Nations Development Programme, the World Bank, and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in Paris, where he served as an Economist and Senior Data Scientist. These roles have informed his policy-relevant research and global perspective on labor market dynamics.
Fabian holds a PhD and degrees in Economics and Social Sciences from prominent European institutions, including Universitá Bocconi in Milan and the University of Cambridge. His academic training underpins his rigorous empirical approach to studying digital labor and technological change.
He is actively involved in research dissemination through events and talks, such as his presentation titled 'AI’s Ripple Effect on Skills and Labour Markets: Evidence from Two Years with the SkillScale Project' at the Complexity Science Hub. These engagements highlight his leadership in advancing public and academic understanding of AI-driven labor market shifts.
