Alex J. Wood is a sociologist of work and employment at the Oxford Internet Institute (OII), University of Oxford. He holds roles as Research Associate (2019–2023) and Researcher (2015–2019). His work focuses on employment relations, labour market transformation, and digital labour dynamics. Wood completed his PhD at the University of Cambridge Department of Sociology (2015), titled The insecure worker: workplace control in the 21st Century, exploring flexible work forms like zero-hour contracts.
His research interests include job insecurity, workplace resistance, industrial relations, and the gig economy. Notable projects include the Microwork and Virtual Production Networks study examining digital labour in Africa/Asia and the iLabour project analyzing global labour market shifts. He has contributed to policy initiatives like the ESRC-funded Zero2Zero workshops addressing workplace stress from insecure scheduling.
