Funda Ustek Spilda is a Senior Research Fellow and Project Manager at the Oxford Internet Institute (OII), University of Oxford, where she coordinates the Fairwork network and its global projects. Her primary focus is on labor conditions in the platform economy, addressing issues of ethics, fairness, and justice through action research. She holds a D.Phil in Sociology (2015) and an MSc in Comparative Social Policy (2010), both from the University of Oxford. Her doctoral research examined survival strategies of women workers in Turkey's informal labor market.
Her roles include leading the Fairwork Foundation, which evaluates labor practices of digital platforms, and managing projects such as Fairwork for AI and Fairwork in Ghana. She previously held postdoctoral positions at Goldsmiths, University of London (ARITHMUS Project) and the London School of Economics (VIRT-EU Project).
Her research explores intersections of digital platforms, global capitalism, and labor rights, with a focus on pandemic responses, AI ethics, and gig economy vulnerabilities. Key projects include analyzing platform policies during the COVID-19 crisis and advocating for standardized labor protections across regions.
