Chris King Chi Chan is an Associate Professor at the Department of Sociology, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the Global Development Institute, University of Manchester. He held Visiting Fellowships at the London School of Economics, Université Paris Cité, and Berlin Social Science Center (WBZ) in 2022. His research focuses on labour, civil society, and social development in China and Asia, with a current emphasis on employment relations in the platform economy. He authored The Challenge of Labour in China: strikes and the changing labour regime in global factories (Routledge, 2010) and publishes in journals like Globalizations, Development and Change, and China Quarterly. As Principal Investigator for Fairwork Hong Kong since 2020, he leads initiatives on fair work practices in digital economies.
He served as a Research Associate at the Oxford Internet Institute (OII) from November 2021 to December 2022, contributing to interdisciplinary studies on digital economies and social data science. His work bridges sociological analysis with policy-oriented research, addressing contemporary challenges in labor rights, platform governance, and social inequality.
Recent research includes collaborations on synthetic society dynamics and equitable access to information, reflecting his engagement with emerging technologies' societal impacts. Public talks, such as the OII event on platform labor in Hong Kong, highlight his commitment to disseminating research findings to broader audiences.
