Ewen Harrison is a Professor of Surgery and Data Science at the University of Edinburgh and Consultant HPB Surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. He leads the NIHR Global Surgery Unit and the GlobalSurg Collaborative, the world’s largest surgical research collaboration with over 15,000 collaborators across 100 countries. His work focuses on leveraging data science, AI, and mobile health technologies to improve surgical outcomes in low-resource settings.

Research Interests: Data-driven healthcare, surgical trials, Bayesian statistics, mobile health platforms, and global health equity. He has pioneered large-scale studies such as the largest international cancer surgery study published in the Lancet (2021).
Recent Contributions: During the pandemic, he co-led analytics for the ISARIC4C and PHOSP-Covid cohorts, developing the 4C Mortality Risk Score used in 22+ countries. His work has been recognized through an OBE (2023) and fellowships from the Royal Society of Edinburgh and Academy of Medical Sciences.

Advising & Grants: Leads multiple funded projects including the £20M CHAI AI Hub for Causality in Healthcare. Serves as Programme Director for the ChM General Surgery (distance learning) and has advised UK SAGE during the pandemic. Active in global health initiatives across Africa, Asia, and beyond.
Labs & Teams: Directs the Centre for Medical Informatics at the Usher Institute and collaborates with the GlobalSurg Collaborative to advance surgical care in underserved regions.
