Professor Wendy Bickmore is the Director of the MRC Human Genetics Unit within the Institute of Genetics and Cancer at the University of Edinburgh. She holds leadership roles in both the MRC Human Genetics Unit and the Edinburgh Super-Resolution Imaging Consortium (ESRIC). Her academic journey includes a PhD from Edinburgh University and undergraduate training at Oxford. As a Fellow of the Royal Society, Academy of Medical Sciences, and Royal Society of Edinburgh, she has made significant contributions to chromatin structure, epigenetics, and 3D genome organization.
- Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), University of Edinburgh
- Bachelor of Arts, University of Oxford
Her research investigates how the spatial organization of the genome influences gene regulation in development and disease, with a focus on enhancer-promoter communication, polycomb-mediated chromatin folding, and nuclear architecture. Recent work explores estrogen-dependent transcriptional dynamics and heterochromatin reorganization during senescence.
The lab’s publications reveal trends in 3D genome organization, enhancer dysfunction, and chromatin epigenetic regulation. Key collaborations span institutions like NYU Langone Health, University of Copenhagen, and CSIC in Spain.
- Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS)
- Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (FMedSci)
- Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE)
- EMBO member
She supervises PhD students including Grace Alston, Beth Bartlett, Giovanna Weykopf, and Alexis Ioannou. Her research is funded by the MRC, Wellcome Trust, and BBSRC, with recent projects like the University Unit Strategic Partnership (2023-2028) and RACE: RNA and Cell Biology (2023-2029).
Professor Bickmore leads the development of advanced subcellular imaging techniques, genome editing tools, and chromosome conformation capture methods. Her team includes key members like Dr. Simon Biddie (Clinical Lecturer), Dr. Iain Williamson (Investigator Scientist), and Dr. Elias Friman (Research Fellow).
