Dr Emma Till is a Senior Lecturer in the Institute of Education at the University of Winchester, specializing in geography education and teacher identity. She joined the university in 2008 after a career in primary education as a classroom teacher and senior leader in schools across South-East England and South-East Asia. Her roles include coordinating Professional Studies across undergraduate and postgraduate teacher education programs and collaborating with the student admissions team in Winchester and the Channel Islands.
Emma holds a PhD in Education (awarded 2018) titled ‘Being a geographer: Towards an understanding of Primary Teachers’ Constructs of Subject Specific Identity’. She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has received a UCET Grant (2016) to investigate geography teacher education in Singapore and China. Her research focuses on teacher identity development, phenomenological approaches to education, and international geography education strategies.
Emma actively contributes to academic communities through roles on the UK Sub-Committee of the International Geographical Union and Commission for Geographical Education, and the Geography Education Research Collective (GEReCO). Her publications span peer-reviewed articles, conference presentations, and educational resource books addressing primary geography pedagogy, teacher training, and curriculum design.
Her work bridges theory and practice, emphasizing the importance of teacher identity in shaping educational outcomes and advocating for geographically literate curricula. Key contributions include exploring pre-service teachers’ perceptions of geography, analyzing primary teachers’ geographical knowledge bases, and promoting outdoor learning methodologies.
