Dr. Emma Nishio is a Lecturer in Law at Swansea University’s Hillary Rodham Clinton School of Law. She joined the faculty in October 2016 and teaches Public Law. Her research focuses on access to justice for asylum seekers and refugees, with a particular emphasis on fairness in asylum adjudication systems in England and Wales. She coordinates the LLB Law Dissertation module and serves on the LLM Human Rights Programme Committee.
Dr. Nishio holds an LLB (Hons) from the University of Edinburgh, an LLM (Distinction) in Human Rights Law from Cardiff University, and an MSc in Social Science Research Methods from Cardiff University. Her doctoral research, funded by the ESRC, examines fairness within asylum awards. She has over six years of experience as an accredited immigration adviser, specializing in asylum cases, and has been actively involved in supporting asylum seekers since a 2008/09 internship with AMERA (Egypt branch of a UK NGO).
As a Trustee of Asylum Justice, she advocates for improved access to justice for asylum seekers and refugees in Wales. Her publications explore legal barriers faced by asylum seekers, EU law’s transformative potential in asylum disputes, and legal aid rights in migration contexts.
