Emily Newman is an Associate Professor of Art at Drake University's College of Arts & Sciences, Department of Art & Design. She holds an MFA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a BFA from Syracuse University. Her interdisciplinary practice explores perception through sculpture, drawing, and installation, focusing on domestic consumption patterns and material transformation.
- Teaches courses: Beginning Drawing, Three-Dimensional Design, and Introduction to Art for Non-Majors
- Curated a textiles exhibition funded by Iowa Arts Council/NEA
Research Interests:
- Analyzes spatial perception through material substitution and illusion
- Investigates the tension between handmade and mass-produced objects
- Uses everyday domestic items (packaging, snacks, household objects) to create permanent art forms
- Explores psychological and biological aspects of visual misinterpretation
Exhibitions include solo shows at Blanden Museum of Art and Farnham Galleries, plus group shows at Site:Brooklyn, Manifest Gallery, and Attleboro Art Museum. Recent work examines highway travel observations and snack food packaging as cultural artifacts.
Grants include Iowa Arts Council/NEA funding for textile exhibition curation. Active in community-engaged art projects that bridge domestic life and artistic practice.
