Dr. Ellen van Holstein is a Vice Chancellor's Postdoctoral Fellow in the School of Global Urban and Social Studies at RMIT University, based at the City Campus in Melbourne. Her research focuses on community groups in contemporary cities, exploring how funding, digital technologies, and participatory mechanisms shape their operations and inclusivity. She holds a PhD from the University of Wollongong and previously worked at the University of Melbourne on projects like 'The Disability Inclusive City' and 'Young People at a Crossroads.'
Her current projects include analyzing policy impacts on Australian community centers, addressing loneliness through VicHealth funding, and enhancing digital skills for marginalized groups via the Australian Communication Consumers Action Network. She employs participatory methods, collaborating with community researchers and reference committees. Key research areas include inclusive community spaces, environmental activism, and digitization of community services.
Her work intersects with UN Sustainable Development Goals 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and 10 (Reduced Inequalities). She is open to supervising Masters and PhD students and collaborates on media and industry projects. Recent publications span loneliness geographies, disability inclusion, and digital inequality in urban contexts.
