Professor Hannah Badland is a leading academic at RMIT University's School of Global, Urban and Social Studies, currently serving as the Director of the Social Equity Research Centre and an Australian Research Council Future Fellow. Her research focuses on the intersection of built environments, health equity, and disability inclusion, with a strong emphasis on policy translation. She holds a PhD in Public Health from Auckland University of Technology (2007) and has held senior research roles globally, including at the University of Melbourne and University College London.
Her interdisciplinary work investigates how urban design and social policies impact health outcomes, particularly for marginalized populations. Key themes include disability-inclusive urban planning, early childhood development inequities, and the role of built environments in reducing social disparities. She has published over 170 articles in top journals like The Lancet and secured $24M in research funding.
Professor Badland's research informs international, national, and state policies through indicators and frameworks adopted by policymakers. Awards include the inaugural Australian Health Promotion Association Thinker in Residence and Salzburg Global Fellowship. Her current projects address disability social determinants and sustainable urban development aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals (Good Health, Reduced Inequalities, Sustainable Cities).
