Edward J Kolla is an Associate Professor at the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, Qatar campus of Georgetown University. His expertise lies in European history and the history of international law, with a particular focus on the French Revolution's impact on sovereignty and legal frameworks. He served as Chairperson of the faculty at GU-Q from 2021 to 2024 and is on sabbatical during the 2024-25 academic year.
Education: Ph.D. in History from Johns Hopkins University and B.A. from the University of Toronto.
Research interests include the intersection of sovereignty, international law, and revolutionary movements. His first book, Sovereignty, International Law, and the French Revolution (2017), explores how the French Revolution reshaped territorial claims through popular sovereignty concepts. His current project examines the historical development of passport systems. His work often bridges legal theory, political philosophy, and historical analysis.
Recent publications analyze Enlightenment-era legal thought, revolutionary legal frameworks, and Napoleonic-era policies. His reviews and critiques engage with prominent historiography on the French Revolution and its global implications. He has contributed to debates on the origins of modern international law and the interplay between commerce and legal systems.
