Dr. Donna Martin is a Professor and Associate Dean (Graduate Programs) in the College of Nursing at the University of Manitoba, where she has been a key leader since 2018. She is based at the Helen Glass Centre for Nursing and is actively involved in research, education, and administration within the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences.
Her educational background includes a PhD from the University of British Columbia (2006), a Master of Nursing (1997), and a Bachelor of Nursing (1991), all from the University of Manitoba. She began her nursing career as a Registered Nurse at Health Sciences Centre, Winnipeg, in 1976.
Dr. Martin's research is centered on health equity and social justice, with a strong emphasis on qualitative methods and community-driven inquiry. She works closely with marginalized and Indigenous populations, particularly focusing on the health impacts of forced displacement and systemic inequities. Her work with the Little Saskatchewan First Nation following the 2011 human-made flood has been nationally recognized and has informed disaster preparedness policy.
Her recent research outputs reflect a consistent focus on trauma, mental health, Indigenous resilience, and policy implications of displacement. These studies employ deep qualitative engagement to amplify the lived experiences of affected communities.

She actively supervises graduate and undergraduate students passionate about nursing education, health services, and equity-focused research. Her leadership extends to the Manitoba Centre for Nursing and Health Research (MCNHR), where she supports student research internships and contributes to the growth of collaborative nursing science. She has also championed innovative initiatives such as a leadership podcast created by students under her guidance.
