Annette Schultz is a Professor in the College of Nursing at the University of Manitoba, part of the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences. She is actively affiliated with Ongomiizwin Research, Manitoba Centre for Nursing and Health Research, and the Ontario Tobacco Research Unit. Her work spans national collaborations with investigators, policymakers, practitioners, and Indigenous communities.
Education:
- PhD, University of British Columbia (2005)
- Master of Nursing, University of Victoria (1999)
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing, University of Victoria (1995)
- Diploma of Nursing, Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Sciences (1981)
Dr. Schultz's research centers on health systems and policies, with a strong emphasis on structural determinants of health, including systemic racism, colonial relations, and epistemological inequities. Since 2014, she has focused on Indigenous health—particularly heart health, cancer incidence, maternal/child health, and storytelling methods—using decolonizing methodologies and two-eyed seeing. Her earlier work addressed tobacco use, smoke-free policies, and health equity. She is a recognized expert in mixed methods, participatory research, and knowledge translation.
Her recent scholarly output reflects a trend toward patient-engaged and community-led research, particularly in Indigenous health contexts. These studies integrate qualitative and quantitative data to inform policy and improve health outcomes. She emphasizes ethical engagement, co-creation of knowledge, and structural change.

She does not currently accept graduate students but has supervised several advisees, including those who presented award-winning research.
She is actively involved in research teams and labs such as Ongomiizwin Research and the Asper Clinical Research Institute, where she conducts community-based, Indigenous-led health research using decolonizing frameworks and two-eyed seeing principles.
