Lynn Scruby is an Assistant Professor in the College of Nursing at the University of Manitoba, within the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences. She is also a research affiliate at the Manitoba Centre for Nursing and Health Research (MCNHR), where she leads community-based research focused on social justice, health equity, and access to care for vulnerable populations including refugees, low-income women, Indigenous peoples, and individuals with mental health challenges.
Her educational background includes a PhD from the University of Manitoba (1999), an M.Sc. from the University of Minnesota (1980), a Bachelor of Nursing from McGill University (1968), a Post Graduate Diploma in Advanced Psychiatric Nursing from the University of Saskatchewan (1965), and a Nursing Diploma from St. Paul’s Hospital School of Nursing, Saskatoon (1964).
Dr. Scruby’s research is deeply rooted in qualitative and community-based methodologies, emphasizing interprofessional collaboration and policy impact. Her recent work explores refugee health care experiences and aims to develop interprofessional simulation training for health sciences students to improve cultural competence and care delivery. She has mentored numerous graduate and undergraduate researchers and continues to accept Master’s and PhD candidates.
Her research interests span social justice, health equity, knowledge translation, health policy, population health, and the social determinants of health. She has led interprofessional teams across Nursing, Pharmacy, Medicine, and Rehabilitation Sciences, focusing on improving access and outcomes for marginalized communities.
Dr. Scruby has received numerous awards recognizing her teaching excellence, community engagement, and leadership. These include the Dr. and Mrs. H.H. Saunderson Award for Teaching Excellence (2005), the University of Manitoba Community Engagement Award (2021), and the Award of Excellence in Education from the Association of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (2023).

She has served on multiple community boards, including Klinic Community Health Centre, Wolseley Family Place, the Women’s Health Research Foundation of Canada, and the Irene E. Nordwich Foundation, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to community service and advocacy. Her work bridges academic research with real-world policy and practice, aiming to transform health systems to be more equitable and inclusive.
Dr. Scruby leads the Integrative Focus course in the graduate nursing program and has taught community health, health promotion, and policy courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels. She emphasizes authenticity in teaching to combat student impostor syndrome and has been deeply influenced by mentors such as Dr. Janice Dodd and Nettie Peters. Her research is supported by grants such as the University Collaborative Research Program, and she actively collaborates with interprofessional teams to address systemic barriers in health care.
She is affiliated with research groups including Family Resource Programs Canada and the University of Manitoba Qualitative Research Group, and her work has been presented at local, national, and international conferences. Her long-standing commitment to nursing education, research, and social justice reflects a career dedicated to improving health outcomes through community engagement and systemic change.
