Diane Luchese is a Professor of Music Theory in the Department of Music at Towson University's College of Fine Arts and Communication, where she has served since 1999. Prior academic appointments include Ohio State University, Roosevelt University in Chicago, and the New England Conservatory. She maintains an active career as a freelance church organist in the Baltimore metropolitan area.
Her educational credentials feature a Ph.D. in music theory from Northwestern University, dual Master of Music degrees in music theory and organ performance from the New England Conservatory, and a Bachelor of Music in organ from the Manhattan School of Music where she received the Bronson Ragan Memorial Award for Excellence in Organ. Her principal organ instructors included Yuko Hayashi and Frederick Swann, with composition studies under M. William Karlins and Robert Cogan.
Dr. Luchese's research explores counterpoint, cognition-based music pedagogy, rhythmic structures, and the works of Bach, Hildegard von Bingen, Messiaen, and Ligeti. She actively investigates the pipe organ's role in jazz and rock contexts, bridging historical performance practices with contemporary applications. Her scholarly work connects theoretical frameworks with practical performance considerations across diverse musical eras.
Her publications include a chapter in Olivier Messiaen: The Centenary Papers and articles in Sonus and The American Organist, with presentations at major international conferences including the First International Congress on Messiaen Studies, Oxford University's Making Time in Music Conference, and the International Society of Hildegard von Bingen Studies.
Notable honors include the Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award for classical performance (2017) and the Bronson Ragan Memorial Award for Excellence in Organ. These recognize both her scholarly contributions and exceptional performance artistry.
An acclaimed performer, Luchese specializes in early and contemporary repertoire with landmark performances including John Cage's 15-hour Organ2/ASLSP at Towson University (2009), subsequent realizations at Leeds Cathedral, and the nief-norf Research Summit. Her recording Light and Dark and In Between showcases Baltimore's contemporary organ music scene on the Raven label.
