Christopher Adler is a Professor of Music and Director of the Asian Studies program at the University of San Diego. He holds a PhD in Composition from Duke University, MA in Composition from Duke, and dual BAs in Music Composition and Mathematics from MIT. His research focuses on cross-cultural hybrid composition, integrating traditional Thai/Lao music with contemporary techniques, algorithmic methods, and improvisation. A leading performer of the khaen (Laotian free-reed mouth organ), he actively commissions new works and performs globally with ensembles like NOISE and at festivals such as nief-norf. Adler also collaborates with interdisciplinary projects, including the soundON Festival and Art+Intermedia initiatives with the Department of Art, Architecture + Art History.
His compositions have been performed at major venues like Carnegie Hall and released on labels including Tzadik and Innova. He teaches courses in music theory, world music, and sound art while contributing to USD’s Honors Program with courses on South/Southeast Asian music and religion. His work balances academic rigor with creative practice, bridging mathematics, cultural studies, and performance.
