Dennis Gilbert is a Principle Lecturer in the Communication and Media Studies Department at the University of Southern Maine, where he has served since 1983. He coordinates internships and service learning initiatives within the department. Gilbert holds an MFA in fiction from the Iowa Writers Workshop and a BA in English from Colby College.
His interdisciplinary career spans creative writing, journalism, and visual arts. Key research interests include long-form journalism, creative non-fiction, and community engagement through media and arts. He pioneered a multi-media installation Insular Harmonies (1993), supported by the NEA’s New Forms Initiative, and authored the poetry collection Cormorant Diving (1990). His work explores word-image dynamics and collaborative art forms.
Teaching roles include adjunct positions at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts and directing the Bates College Summer Program in Creative Writing. He has also engaged extensively with public schools via the Maine Touring Artists Program. Beyond academia, Gilbert serves on the Board of Directors of the Community Television Network and advocates for part-time faculty rights at USM.
