Morgan Talty

Morgan Talty is an Assistant Professor of English, Creative Writing, and Native American Studies at the University of Maine, and a faculty member of the Stonecoast MFA in Creative Writing (University of Southern Maine). He also serves as Prose Editor at The Massachusetts Review. Talty is a citizen of the Penobscot Indian Nation and grew up within his Indigenous community. His academic and creative work bridges literary fiction, cultural studies, and Indigenous knowledge systems.

Education: BA in Native American Studies from Dartmouth College, MFA in Creative Writing from Stonecoast MFA, and AA in Liberal Arts from Eastern Maine Community College.

Research interests focus on Indigenous storytelling, cultural preservation, and the intersection of creative writing with Native American Studies. His award-winning debut collection Night of the Living Rez (2022) explores contemporary Indigenous experiences through innovative fictional narratives. Recent publications appear in Granta, Georgia Review, and Narrative Magazine.

Recognitions include the 2022 New England Book Award in Fiction, 2021 Narrative Prize, and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and Elizabeth George Foundation. Talty’s editorial work amplifies underrepresented voices in literary publishing.

Teaching focuses on creative writing pedagogy and Indigenous literary traditions. He advises MFA students through the low-residency program and contributes to community-based research projects.
