Morgan Talty is an Assistant Professor of English at the University of Maine, specializing in Creative Writing and Native American and Contemporary Literature. He holds an MFA from the Stonecoast Program at the University of Southern Maine and a BA from Dartmouth College. Talty is also affiliated with the Stonecoast MFA program in Creative Writing.
His research and creative work focus on Indigenous narratives, contemporary fiction, and the intersections of cultural identity with modernity. He has published extensively in literary journals and anthologies, including Night of the Living Rez (2022), a critically acclaimed short story collection, and Fire Exit (2024), a novel translated into seven languages. His writing explores themes of tribal sovereignty, environmental justice, and familial legacy through innovative narrative forms.
Talty has received major awards such as the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize, the American Academy’s Sue Kaufman Prize, and the National Book Critics Circle John Leonard Prize. His academic contributions include pedagogical research on student engagement in writing curricula.
Teaches courses including ENG 101: College Composition, ENG 170: Foundations of Literary Analysis, and ENG 307: Intro to Creative Writing. Lives in Levant, Maine, and actively participates in Indigenous literary communities.
