Dean Garratt is the Associate Dean: International Programmes at York St John University’s York Business School. He holds a Professorial rank and a PhD in Education from Manchester Metropolitan University. His career includes roles as Professor of Education at the University of Chester and Head of School at York St John. With over 70 publications and an h-index of 25, his research focuses on education policy, citizenship, sociology of sport, and qualitative methodologies.
Education: PhD in Education (Manchester Metropolitan University, 1997), 1st Class Honours in Business Education (1993).
Research Interests:
- Citizenship education and its intersections with national identity
- Ethics and governance in sports coaching
- Sociological critiques of physical education policies
- Qualitative research methods and hermeneutics
Advising & Grants: Supervised 13 doctoral completions and examined 14 theses. Led projects funded by ESRC, DFES/Wellcome Trust, and the Learning and Skills Research Council.
Labs/Teams: Directs the International Programmes portfolio at York Business School, overseeing global initiatives like the international MBA.
