Lindsey Garratt is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Limerick and holds an additional appointment at the European Centre for the Study of Hate. Her research focuses on intersectional inequality, racism, migration, gender, youth, and childhood, with recent work addressing hate crime, activism, and dual-heritage identities. She leads the Migration and Families Network, collaborating with Manchester Metropolitan University and Plymouth University to shape policy and law reform in Europe.
Dr. Garratt’s academic journey includes a PhD from Trinity College Dublin (under the Trinity Immigration Initiative), followed by roles as a Senior Lecturer in Education at Manchester Metropolitan University and a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the ESRC Centre on Dynamics of Ethnicity (CoDE) in Manchester. Her teaching expertise spans sociological theory, race and ethnicity, gender studies, migration, and family dynamics.
Her research integrates psycho-social concepts like authenticity and resilience, often employing qualitative methodologies. Key themes include the racialization of space, embodied identity, and the sociopolitical dimensions of migration. Recent publications analyze hate crime victims’ spatial negotiations, racial dynamics in urban communities, and the lived experiences of marginalized youth in Dublin.
Garratt’s work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to reducing inequality and promoting inclusive societies. She advises students whose research aligns with her interests in migration, race, and social policy.
