Dr Jo Britton is a Senior Lecturer in Applied Sociology and Director of Postgraduate Affairs at the University of Sheffield's School of Sociological Studies, Politics and International Relations. She holds a BA and PhD in Sociology from Liverpool University and has extensive experience in sociological research, including roles at Manchester University and as a Leverhulme Trust Research Fellow.
Her research focuses on race and racism, identity studies, Muslim minorities, and critical whiteness. Notable projects include studies on Muslim family dynamics, intergenerational relations, and the impact of racialization on Muslim communities. She is currently co-investigator on an ESRC project exploring ethnicity and unequal ageing in Rotherham and Sheffield, collaborating with Black, Minority Ethnic, and Refugee communities.
Dr Britton teaches modules such as 'Whiteness, Power and Privilege' and supervises postgraduate research on topics like Brexit's impact on belonging, British Somali youth resilience, and transracial adoption. Her work emphasizes applying sociological theory to real-world issues, fostering critical engagement with social structures and power dynamics.
Her publications span over two decades, addressing themes like racialized masculinities, cross-racial surrogacy, and post-Paris Attacks Islamophobia. While no formal scientific awards are listed, her contributions to sociological discourse on race, gender, and multiculturalism are widely recognized in academia.
