Marcus Britton

Marcus Britton is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), affiliated with the Urban Studies program. He holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Northwestern University. His research focuses on urban sociology, racial segregation, and place-based inequalities, with a particular emphasis on how residential patterns affect health outcomes, educational attainment, and social mobility.

Key research interests include racial and ethnic disparities in urban contexts, the impact of neighborhood environments on health, and the spatial dynamics of social integration. His work spans topics like residential segregation's impact on preterm birth rates among marginalized groups, the effects of neighborhood mobility on educational outcomes, and interethnic relationships in diverse cities like Houston.

Britton has published extensively in journals such as Social Science Research, Urban Affairs Review, and Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies. His recent work includes studies on healthcare disparities in Peru and the role of arts education in improving student achievement among Black and Latinx populations.

He teaches courses on race and ethnicity in global contexts, urban social structure, and advanced quantitative analysis. Britton is currently on sabattical for the 2024-2025 academic year. His office is located in Bolton Hall 728.
