Dr Graeme Law is an Associate Professor and Associate Head of School for Sport at York St John University, with roles in the School of Science, Technology and Health. He holds a first-class BA in Physical Education and Sports Coaching from York St John, followed by an MSc and PhD in the Sociology of Sport from the University of Chester. His research focuses on professional athletes' mental health, gambling in football, identity creation, and career transitions, with notable projects like the Movember-funded Performance Habits initiative. He co-founded the Tackling Welfare in Sport Together research group and has presented at UEFA and global conferences.
Teaching spans Sport and Exercise Science and Physical Education courses, emphasizing sociology and pedagogy. His work bridges academia and practice through education programs on player identity and gambling awareness with professional clubs. Awards include Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA). Professional activities include external examining at Edge Hill University and memberships in the Professional Footballers’ Association and Football Association.
His football career included 12 years as a player in England and Scotland (including international caps for Scotland), followed by coaching roles at professional clubs and the La Manga Football Academy in Spain. Current projects address elite athlete wellbeing and transition support.
