Dawn K Wing serves as Associate Professor of Library and Information Services at Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, MN, where she bridges academic scholarship with hands-on book arts practice. An active College Book Art Association (CBAA) member, she is recognized as a Featured Artist for her innovative contributions to the field.
Her research centers on interdisciplinary Book Arts, specializing in Visual Poetry, Zine Culture, and Asian Paper Arts traditions. She creates tactile works using suminagashi marbling, orizomegami dyeing, and accordion formats to explore Chinese heritage and ecological themes through 'comiku' (comics + haiku) and sculptural books. Her practice transforms paper textures into sensory narratives that connect personal and collective human experiences across time and space.
Notable recognition includes:
- 2024 Minnesota State Art Board Creative Individuals Grant
As an educator, Wing facilitates public workshops on visual poetry creation while completing her Core Certificate in Book Arts at Minnesota Center for Book Arts. Her pedagogy emphasizes experiential learning through book arts, directly informing her studio practice at Waterpig Press where she produces award-winning works like 'Dandelions' and 'This is How We Survived'—intimate accordion books (2.5" x 2.5" closed) featuring digital prints on cardstock with handmade suminagashi end-papers.
Waterpig Press represents her commitment to preserving traditional paper crafts while innovating contemporary book structures. Current projects focus on advancing her technical mastery through formal certification, with future work likely exploring deeper integrations of digital media and ancestral paper techniques in poetic book forms.
