Briony Hughes is a Lecturer in Creative Writing at the Department of English, Royal Holloway, University of London. She holds a Techne AHRC-funded PhD (2024) and is the 2023/2024 Poet in Residence at the University of Surrey. Her research focuses on hydropoetics, ecopoetry, visual poetry, and feminist/queer publishing networks. She leads the MA in Poetry and has taught at Brunel University and Beyond Form Creative Writing.
Her publications include poetry collections such as Rhizomes and Milk, and her artists’ books are held in major institutions like the British Library. She co-edits the HOW(ever) How2 Digital Archive at SUNY Buffalo and the poetry feature in Resurgence and Ecologist magazine. Her work engages with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to environmental sustainability and education.
Briony’s academic contributions span interdisciplinary projects, including the How to Read: Scholarship and Innovation Project (2024–present). She actively participates in public engagement through festivals like the Paper Ink Print Festival and the Thrive Festival, blending art, ecology, and community education.
Her awards include the prestigious Poet in Residence appointment (2023), and she serves as Editor-in-Chief of Osmosis Press and co-founder of the Crested Tit Collective, fostering innovative poetry and small-press initiatives.
