Jennifer Fandel is an Instructor & Tutor Coordinator at Odyssey Beyond Bars, affiliated with the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She holds an MFA from Minnesota State University and has taught poetry in diverse settings including prisons, women’s shelters, parks & recreation programs, and grade schools. Her career spans over a decade in publishing, where she has worked on children’s and young adult nonfiction books, academic publications, and self-publishing projects.
Research Interests: Jennifer’s work focuses on
- Poetry instruction in correctional institutions
- Creative writing pedagogy
- Community-based arts education
- Interdisciplinary collaborations between museums and writing

- Supporting marginalized voices through writing
Additional Roles: She teaches remotely via Canvas and Zoom for UW-Madison Continuing Studies and has led workshops on topics like rhythm in poetry and writing during crises. Currently, she combines teaching with communication and marketing work in the education sector.
Personal and Professional Background: Jennifer is a published poet and writer who previously worked in university press publishing, self-publishing, and academic publishing. She is active in Wisconsin after returning from a 20-year period living across the Mississippi River region, reconnecting with family and long-time friends.
Projects and Outreach: Her teaching includes courses like “Genres of Writing” and “Writing through the Pandemic,” and she has collaborated with organizations such as Prison Performing Arts, Safe Connections, and the Chazen Museum of Art.
