Christopher Bakken is a Professor of English at Allegheny College, where he directs the Writing Workshops in Greece: Thessaloniki & Thasos. He holds a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, an M.F.A. from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Houston. His work bridges poetry, nonfiction, and literary translation, with a focus on Mediterranean culture and Greek influences. Bakken has been a Fulbright Scholar twice, most recently at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2021-22). His honors include the T.S. Eliot Prize for Poetry (2001) and the Collins Prize (2020).
His research interests encompass creative writing (poetry/nonfiction), literary translation, and cultural studies. Notable works include the culinary memoir Honey, Olives, Octopus (2013) and poetry collections like Eternity & Oranges (2016) and the forthcoming Driving the Beast (2025). He has presented widely, including at the International Literary Festival in Tinos (2022) and the Modern Greek Studies Association Symposium (2017).
