Professor David Ormerod is a Visiting Professor at Queen Mary University of London and holds a Chair in Criminal Law at University College London. He is a leading figure in criminal justice, serving as General Editor of the Criminal Law Review and Editor-in-Chief of Blackstone's Criminal Practice. His roles include part-time practice as a barrister (Door Tenant at 18 Red Lion Court, London) and Bencher of the Middle Temple since 2009. He has held significant judicial appointments, including Deputy High Court Judge (2018), and was honored as Queen’s Counsel (HC) in 2013 and awarded a CBE in 2021.
Ormerod’s research focuses on criminal law doctrinal analysis, law reform, and criminal justice efficiency. He has led the Law Commission’s criminal law projects (2010–2019) and contributed to major reforms, including redrafting jury directions for the Crown Court Bench Book (2010–2011) and co-authoring the Judicial College’s Crown Court Compendium (2016). His work emphasizes practical legal analysis and legislative critique, frequently cited in appellate courts.
Public engagement includes parliamentary testimony (e.g., House of Lords Committees on Forensic Science, Sentencing), media appearances (BBC, Sky TV), and judicial training lectures on criminal law, expert evidence, and hearsay. He co-authors a monthly criminal law newsletter for judges and has authored or edited seminal texts like Smith, Hogan and Ormerod’s Criminal Law and Halsbury’s Laws of England.
Awards reflect his contributions: CBE (2021), HC (2013), and judicial appointments underscore his dual academic and legal impact. His work bridges theory and practice, shaping criminal justice policy and legal education.
