Karl Laird is a College Lecturer in Law at St Edmund Hall, University of Oxford, specializing in criminal law and public law. He teaches criminal law to students at St Edmund Hall and is a co-author of Smith, Hogan, & Ormerod’s Criminal Law, the leading textbook on criminal law in England and Wales.
His research focuses on criminal law, the law of evidence, and intersections with public law. He contributes to legal publications such as Montgomery and Ormerod: Fraud Law and Practice, and writes commentaries for the Criminal Law Review and Lloyd’s Law Reports: Financial Crime. He also authors the bribery and corruption chapter in Blackstone’s Criminal Practice.
Karl combines his academic role with practice as a barrister at 6KBW College Hill and serves as a Special Adviser to Jonathan Hall QC, the Independent Reviewer of Terrorism Legislation. He has lectured extensively to judicial bodies, prosecutors, and international legal institutions.
Karl holds an LLB from the University of London and a BCL from the University of Oxford. His work bridges academic scholarship with practical legal application, particularly in criminal and financial crime law.
