Professor David Ormerod holds the Chair in Criminal Law at University College London's Faculty of Laws. He is a part-time practicing barrister at 18 Red Lion Chambers and serves as a Bencher of the Middle Temple. He has held roles such as Deputy High Court Judge (2018), Queen’s Counsel (Honoris Causa), and was awarded a CBE for services to criminal justice. He has contributed extensively to criminal law reform through his work with the Law Commission as Criminal Law Commissioner (2010–2019) and advisory roles on parliamentary committees and judicial reviews.
His research focuses on criminal law, forensic science, and judicial procedures. He edits Blackstone's Criminal Practice and co-authored key judicial training materials, including the Judicial College Bench Book and the Crown Court Compendium. His work emphasizes legal reform, evidence standards, and sentencing practices. He regularly advises judicial bodies and appears before parliamentary committees on legislative standards and forensic science.
Professor Ormerod’s awards include the CBE, DCL Honoris Causa, and honorary bencher titles. He has led initiatives to streamline criminal justice efficiency and modernize court procedures. His contributions span academic publishing, judicial education, and public discourse through media appearances on BBC and Sky TV.
