Prof. Daniel Nagin is the Teresa and H. John Heinz III University Professor of Public Policy and Statistics at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), serving as Associate Dean of Faculty since 2006. He holds affiliations with the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime, Security and Law as a Max Planck Law Research Fellow. His expertise spans criminology, public policy, and statistical methodologies for analyzing criminal behavior and deterrence.
Education:
- Ph.D. in 1976 from what is now the Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy (CMU).
Research Interests:
- Behavioral approaches to understanding and combating crime.
- Deterrence effects of penalties, life-course criminal behavior analysis.
- Statistical methods for longitudinal data in criminology and social sciences.
Awards and Honors:
- Elected Fellow: American Society of Criminology, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, National Academy of Sciences.
- Recipient of the Stockholm Prize in Criminology (2014), NAS Scientific Reviewing Award (2017), and multiple criminology accolades.

- Chair of the National Research Council’s Committee on Deterrence and the Death Penalty.
- Past Deputy Secretary for Fiscal Policy in Pennsylvania’s Department of Revenue (1981–1986).
