Daniel Nagin

Daniel Nagin is the Lester Hamburg University Professor of Public Policy and Statistics at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), serving as Associate Dean of the Heinz College since 2006. He holds a Ph.D. from CMU’s Heinz College (formerly part of the Graduate School of Industrial Administration). His research focuses on criminal behavior trajectories, deterrence mechanisms, and statistical methods for longitudinal data analysis. He has held leadership roles, including Deputy Secretary for Fiscal Policy in Pennsylvania (1981–1986) and chair of the National Research Council’s Committee on Deterrence and the Death Penalty.

He is a Fellow of the American Society of Criminology, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and National Academy of Sciences, among others. Notable awards include the Stockholm Prize in Criminology (2014) and the National Academy of Science Award for Scientific Reviewing (2017). His work spans interdisciplinary journals, including Journal of the American Statistical Association and Crime and Justice Annual Review. He is also a Max Planck Law Research Fellow in Germany.

His research emphasizes life-course criminology, policy evaluation, and statistical innovation, with applications to crime prevention and public policy. Recent work examines guardianship mechanisms, sanction perceptions, and the societal impacts of policing strategies.
