Daniel S. Nagin is a distinguished academic at Carnegie Mellon University, holding the Teresa and H. John Heinz III University Professorship of Public Policy and Statistics. He was appointed a Max Planck Law Research Fellow in 2021 by the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime, Security, and Law in Freiburg and the Max Planck Institute for Research on Collective Goods in Bonn. His career spans roles as Associate Dean of Faculty (since 2006) and leadership in national research committees.

Research Interests focus on the intersection of criminology, behavioral science, and statistics. He studies the evolution of criminal and antisocial behaviors over the life course, the deterrent effects of criminal and non-criminal penalties, and advanced statistical methods for longitudinal data. His interdisciplinary work bridges criminology, sociology, economics, psychology, and law.

Advisory Roles include chairing the National Research Council’s Committee on Deterrence and the Death Penalty and serving as Deputy Secretary for Fiscal Policy and Analysis in the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue (1981-1986). He has also received grants for cross-disciplinary research on crime prevention and statistical modeling.
