- PhD, University of Texas at Austin
Research Focus: Smith's work bridges creative practice and critical theory, examining poetry's role in civic discourse through lenses of rhetorical theory, poetics, and American literary history. His scholarship consistently explores how poetic forms generate cultural values, particularly in post-1960 dissent movements and public sphere interventions. Current investigations extend to contemporary poets' engagement with HIV/AIDS discourse and social justice.
Publication Trends: Recent scholarship (2017-2025) reveals sustained focus on Black Mountain poets (Olson, Duncan), Beat Generation figures, and contemporary innovators like Norma Cole. His work increasingly analyzes poetry's intersection with public health crises and civic action, while maintaining parallel creative output in poetry collections that embody his theoretical frameworks.
Teaching & Mentorship: Smith directs undergraduate curriculum while teaching graduate/undergraduate courses in creative writing, poetry/poetics, rhetorical theory, and literary non-fiction. As Program Director, he oversees academic advising for English majors and shapes pedagogical approaches to literary studies.
