Tracy K. Smith is a Professor of English and African and African American Studies at Harvard University, holding the Susan S. and Kenneth L. Wallach Chair at the Harvard Radcliffe Institute. She serves as the 22nd Poet Laureate of the United States and is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author. Currently on leave for the 2024-25 academic year, her work bridges poetry, literary criticism, and translation. Smith earned a B.A. from Harvard College (1994) and an M.F.A. from Columbia University (1997).
Her research focuses on 20th and 21st century poetry, African American literary traditions, and creative writing pedagogy. Notable works include Life on Mars (Pulitzer Prize, 2012) and Wade in the Water. Her publications explore themes of identity, cosmic inquiry, and cultural memory through innovative poetic forms.
