Lytton Smith is a Professor of Poetry in the Department of English and Creative Writing at State University of New York at Geneseo. Holding a Ph.D. and M.F.A. from Columbia University, he has been a faculty member since 2014, contributing to the study of poetry’s craft and societal role.

Smith’s research and teaching focus on the intersection of poetry with ecological concerns, social justice, and transnational perspectives. His courses, such as Ecopoetics and Justice, Poetry and the Border, and studies of 20th/21st Century Black Poetry Books, emphasize poetry’s capacity to engage with contemporary political and cultural issues.
Awarded a 2019 NEA Translation Fellowship, Smith has translated twelve Icelandic novels and nonfiction works, including titles like The All-Purpose Magical Tent (2009) and The Square (2021). His creative practice as a poet and translator underscores cross-cultural dialogue and the global relevance of literary forms.
