Katharine Coles is a Distinguished Professor of English at the University of Utah, holding appointments since 2017. She specializes in poetry, creative writing, and interdisciplinary studies at the intersection of literature and science. Her roles include former Poet Laureate of Utah (2017–present), Director of the Utah Symposium in Science and Literature, and inaugural Director of the Harriet Monroe Poetry Institute at the Poetry Foundation (2009–2010). Coles earned her PhD in English from the University of Utah (1985–1989).
Her research explores poetry, poetics, and environmental writing, with notable works like Ghost Apples (2023) and THE STRANGER I BECOME: ON WALKING, LOOKING, AND WRITING. Her interdisciplinary projects include visualization of poetic forms and collaborations with scientists through grants from the NSF and NEH.
Coles teaches graduate/undergraduate courses in creative writing and poetry, including thesis supervision and experimental forms. Awards include the Guggenheim Fellowship (2012), Antarctic Artists and Writers Program Fellowship (2009), and David Gardner Award (2012). She co-directs the Utah Symposium, fostering dialogue between science and literature.
Her grants include funding for projects like POEMAGE (2015–2016) and the Utah Symposium (2001–2008). Professional activities include board participation with Routeledge Press and peer review roles. Her work bridges creative practice, pedagogy, and public humanities engagement through museum residencies and literary symposia.
