Dr Cynog Prys is a Senior Lecturer at Bangor University's School of History, Law and Social Sciences, specializing in sociology, social policy, and language planning. He holds a PhD (2011), MEd (2005), and First-Class degree (2003) from Bangor University. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and co-recipient of the 2023 Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol award for Outstanding Welsh-Medium Learning Resources.
His research focuses on Welsh language use in civil society, digital domains, and economic contexts. Key projects include the ARFOR-funded Bilingual Workforce Recruitment Toolkit (2024) and contributions to the European Language in the Human-Machine Era network. He advises on Welsh Government policies such as Cymraeg 2050.
Dr Prys supervises multiple doctoral students in language planning and digital sociology. He publishes extensively in peer-reviewed journals and collaborates with organizations like S4C, BBC Cymru, and the Welsh Language Commissioner. His teaching emphasizes digital innovation in Welsh-medium education.
He frequently appears on BBC Radio Cymru and S4C discussing language technology, sociocultural change, and policy implications. Recent speaking engagements include conferences on AI in education and sustainable visitor economies.
