Professor Gwenno Ffrancon serves as the Deputy Pro-Vice Chancellor for Welsh Language, Heritage, and Culture at Swansea University. She holds a strategic leadership role in embedding Welsh language, culture, and heritage into all aspects of university life, with a focus on enhancing student experiences through Welsh language learning, research, and civic engagement. Her academic career spans roles at Swansea University (since 2005) and the University of Wales Bangor (2002–2005), where she lectured in Media and Communication.
- Education: BA in Welsh (1997) and PhD in Film Studies (2002) from Aberystwyth University
Research interests center on Welsh cultural identity, media representation, and language education. She previously directed the Hywel Teifi Academy, a center dedicated to promoting Welsh-medium education and language learning opportunities for students and communities. Her work includes extensive publications and editorial leadership of Cyfrwng: Media Wales Journal (2003–2013). She collaborates with national bodies like the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol and manages the University’s Welsh Language Centre (Tŷ'r Gwrhyd) in Pontardawe.
In her current role, she drives initiatives to integrate Welsh culture into the University’s civic mission, supports Welsh language entrepreneurship, and ensures compliance with national language regulations. She also represents Swansea University on the Peace Academy Steering Group and acts as a Welsh for Adults Peer Inspector for Estyn.
