Courtney Sato is the Mellon Assistant Professor in the Department of Studies in Race, Colonialism, and Diaspora at Tufts University, School of Arts and Sciences. Her research focuses on Asian American Studies, transnational American Studies, and Pacific intellectual/cultural histories. She holds a PhD in American Studies from Yale University, an MA and MPhil from Yale and Cambridge Universities, and a BA from Wellesley College.
Research: Dr. Sato’s first book, Pacific Internationalisms, examines interwar Pacific internationalism and transnational activism. Her current project investigates Japanese American tuberculosis patients in WWII-era segregated sanatoria and gendered healthcare practices. She co-directed the Out of the Desert digital project interpreting Japanese American incarceration history.
Grants: Awarded the 2024 grant Pacific Internationalisms: Asian American Mobility, Gender, and Empire.
Teaching: Teaches courses including Intro to RCD, Methods in Studies of RCD, and Asian American Mobilities. Supervised independent studies and thesis projects.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Out of the Desert digital history initiative and collaborates on transpacific research networks.
