Eriko Sato is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Asian & Asian American Studies at Stony Brook University, where she also directs the Language Learning and Research Center (LLRC). She specializes in applied linguistics, translation studies, and Japanese linguistics and pedagogy. Her research focuses on translanguaging, hybridity in language use, intercultural communication, and innovative language teaching methods. She has authored textbooks and learning materials for Japanese and contributed to academic journals like Modern Language Journal and Target: International Journal of Translation Studies.
Dr. Sato's recent monograph, Translanguaging in Translation: Invisible Contributions that Shape Our Language and Society (2022), explores the sociolinguistic impact of translanguaging practices. She serves on the Editorial Board of Translation and Translanguaging in Multilingual Contexts and has published over 20 bilingual Japanese folktale collections. Recognized for her teaching excellence, she received the 2021 SUNY Chancellor's Award and 2019 AAUW Fellowship. Courses taught include Translation Studies, Asian languages pedagogy, and Japanese language instruction at all levels.
Her work bridges theoretical research with practical applications, emphasizing online teaching methodologies and the role of translanguaging in multilingual education. She actively contributes to curriculum development initiatives and has piloted technology-enhanced language programs, reflecting her commitment to innovative educational practices.
