Claudia Smith is an Assistant Professor at the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business, University of Victoria, where she has served for over 15 years. She holds a PhD in Entrepreneurship from the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship at Strathclyde Business School, alongside credentials in public relations and business management. Her expertise spans entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial identity, networks, social capital, and marketing communications.
Dr. Smith’s career includes executive roles in advertising agencies and senior communications positions in the BC provincial government, recognized through industry awards. She teaches courses such as Introduction to Entrepreneurship and How to Build an App Startup, integrating interdisciplinary collaboration between business and engineering students. She is a member of the editorial boards of the International Small Business Journal and Journal of Alternative Finance.
Her research focuses on entrepreneurial identity, digital networks, and resilience, with publications in top-tier journals like Journal of Business Venturing and Journal of Small Business Management. She advocates for addressing Canada’s entrepreneur shortage through education and policy reforms, as highlighted in her 2024 article in The Conversation.
Awardees include the Outstanding Service Award and CAMA Awards for agri-marketing excellence. She leads special projects like the Kidovate Youth Entrepreneurship Program, fostering entrepreneurial mindsets in younger generations.
