Professor Christopher Smith holds a joint appointment as Professor at Nagasaki University's School of Tropical Medicine and Global Health and as Clinical Associate Professor at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine's Department of Clinical Research. His work bridges clinical practice and academic research with a focus on tropical medicine and global health challenges across Southeast Asia, particularly in Cambodia and the Philippines.
Education:
- PhD, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (2017)
- MSc Public Health in Developing Countries (with Distinction), London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (2011)
- MBBCh (medical degree with Merit), Cardiff University (2000)
Professor Smith's research program spans tropical infectious diseases with particular emphasis on leptospirosis, measles, rabies, and snakebite. His work combines clinical epidemiology with innovative approaches to digital health interventions for reproductive health. He has extensive experience conducting randomized controlled trials, observational studies, systematic reviews, and qualitative research in resource-limited settings. His early work focused on contraceptive discontinuation in Cambodia, which led to his PhD research on mobile phone-based interventions for contraception.
His publication record demonstrates a strong focus on tropical infectious diseases in Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines. There's significant emphasis on leptospirosis research, including treatment protocols and epidemiology. His work on digital health interventions for contraception represents an innovative approach to reproductive health challenges, with multiple Cochrane reviews establishing evidence for mobile-based interventions. The publications also reflect his response to emerging health threats, particularly his extensive work on documenting the first COVID-19 cases in the Philippines and analyzing vaccine effectiveness in multiple countries.
Scientific Contributions:
- Lead investigator of the MOTIF trial on mobile technology for improved family planning in Cambodia
- Principal investigator of projects on reproductive health of garment factory workers in Cambodia
- Published Cochrane reviews on antibiotic prophylaxis and treatment for leptospirosis
- Published the report of the first COVID-19 cases in the Philippines, including the first death outside of China
Professor Smith supervises multiple PhD and Master's students working on projects related to tropical medicine, vaccine effectiveness, and reproductive health. He has secured significant research funding from organizations including the Medical Research Council, Wellcome Trust, Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science, and World Health Organization. His collaborative work includes the San-Lazaro hospital-Nagasaki University research office, focusing on fever etiology and tropical diseases such as leptospirosis, diphtheria, measles, HIV, tuberculosis, rabies, dengue, and typhoid.
He serves as course director for the Nagasaki University Master of Tropical Medicine and the Diploma of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (DTM&H). His international field experience includes work with Médecins Sans Frontières in Uganda, as an expedition doctor in Belize, and with the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Foundation in rural Cambodia, demonstrating his commitment to addressing health challenges in diverse global settings.
