Christopher M. Smith serves as Professor of Horn at Texas Tech University's School of Music, where he teaches applied horn and performs with the Faculty Brass Quintet and Mariah Winds ensemble. He holds Principal Horn positions with the Pro Musica Chamber Orchestra of Santa Fe, Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, and Caprock Pro Musica, and has held principal/associate principal roles with the Barcelona Symphony, Sinfonia da Camera, Owensboro Symphony, Evansville Philharmonic, Champaign-Urbana Symphony, Paducah Symphony, Jackson Symphony, Lansing Symphony, and Saginaw Symphony Orchestras.
His educational background includes a Bachelor of Music Performance from Murray State University, where he received The Most Outstanding Senior Man in Music award, and a Master of Music Performance with Honors from the University of Michigan under Lowell Greer.
Professor Smith specializes in Classical Horn Performance and Music Pedagogy, with significant contributions to Orchestral Studies and Historical Performance on natural/Baroque horn. His expertise is demonstrated through frequent recitals, solo appearances at International Horn Society workshops, and articles published in The Instrumentalist, School Band and Orchestra Magazine, and The Horn Call. He is deeply committed to music education through Texas Tech's Summer Band and Orchestra Camp and Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp.

As an educator, Professor Smith has mentored students who secured positions in the New York Philharmonic, Colorado Symphony, Seattle Symphony, Kansas City Philharmonic, St. Louis Symphony, and United States service bands (Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard). He serves as a sought-after adjudicator for the American Horn Competition and International Horn Competition of America, recognized as the youngest judge ever for these competitions since 1994.
His extensive recording credits include labels such as Dorian, Naxos, Marco Polo, Walking Frog, Zephyr, Arabesque, and Harmonia Mundi, with performance experience spanning modern valve horn, natural horn, and Baroque horn through collaborations with the Early Music Foundation of New York and Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra of San Francisco.
