Mark Smith

Mark Smith is a Senior Lecturer in Classical Music, specializing in chamber music. He teaches the BA (Hons) Music (Classical) program and has an extensive career spanning orchestral performance, chamber music, education, and research. His affiliations include roles with prestigious ensembles such as the Esbjerg Ensemble and collaborations with institutions like the Royal Shakespeare Company.

• Education: Royal College of Music (DipRCM, 1986), recipient of the Douglas Moore Horn Prize.

Research interests focus on reviving rarely performed classical works, such as chamber scorings of Bruckner’s Seventh Symphony and Mahler’s Tenth Symphony. He also explores historical instruments like Natural Horn and Baroque Horn, contributing to interdisciplinary performances with theater groups.

Notable career highlights include principal horn roles with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, and international ensembles. He has premiered works with Ensemble Modern and the Birmingham Opera, including Stockhausen’s Mittwoch aus Licht.
