Prof. Dr. Christian Koenig is a full professor at the University of Bonn and Director of the Centre for European Integration Studies (ZEI). He joined Bonn in 1999 after academic positions at the University of Hamburg, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, and Philipps University Marburg. His education includes a law degree from Berlin/Mainz, an LL.M. from the London School of Economics (1986), a doctorate (1988), and habilitation (1993).
His research focuses on:
- European integration law and governance
- Competition policy and state aid frameworks
- Regulation of infrastructure sectors (telecom, energy, transport)
- Digital market governance and net neutrality
- Public procurement and healthcare regulation
Recent publications (2024-2025) demonstrate strong emphasis on telecommunications regulation (net neutrality, spectrum allocation), competition law in digital platforms, state aid compliance in public infrastructure, and privacy issues in workplace communications. His work consistently intersects EU law, economic policy, and sectoral regulation.
Prof. Koenig advises governmental bodies including the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs, Federal Network Agency, and European Commission. He has represented clients in landmark cases before the European Court of Justice (e.g., DocMorris, Lufthansa). As ZEI Director, he oversees research on European governance and edits several legal journals.
