Dr Charlotte-Eve Short is a Clinical Senior Lecturer and Consultant in Genitourinary and HIV Medicine within the Department of Infectious Disease at Imperial College London. She joined Imperial in 2010 as an Academic Clinical Fellow through the NIHR/NHS England Integrated Academic Training Pathway, progressed to a Wellcome Trust Clinical PhD in 2013, and commenced her Academic Clinical Lectureship in 2020. Her research focuses on Bacterial Vaginosis (BV), a neglected condition affecting 10 million UK women with high recurrence rates and serious clinical consequences.
Short investigates BV's immunological mechanisms, particularly its role in preterm birth among women living with HIV and its proinflammatory effects that upregulate collagenase MMP-9. Her work employs molecular genomic techniques to study BV's complex biofilm and anaerobic pathobionts, aiming to develop novel treatments including live biotherapeutic products and antimicrobial resistance strategies. She seeks to replace 40-year-old metronidazole regimens and address the significant psychological burden and stigma associated with BV.
She secured funding from the Wellcome Trust and March of Dimes, established the pan-London HIV Preterm Birth Research Network, and led the pandemic-era CoVidity biobanking study that generated high-impact collaborative publications. Currently, she is initiating a randomized control trial for new BV treatments and developing translational pathways to bring live biotherapeutics to UK clinical practice.
Short leads the Bacterial Vaginosis research program within the Department of Infectious Disease, collaborating through the pan-London HIV Preterm Birth Research Network and interdisciplinary teams across Imperial College. Her work bridges clinical practice with microbiome science to transform women's health outcomes through innovative therapeutic approaches.
